The PE department believes in “education through physical activities”. It aims to guide students to develop an aptitude to excel in various physical activities and also to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. We emphasize on not only developing students’ physical competence, but also their cognitive skills. During PE lessons, collaboration, communication and aesthetic appreciation is also imparted, leading to nurturing of positive values in the students.
For junior graders, emphasis is on enhancing students’ Fundamental Movement Skills. This improves their coordination, locomotion, control, balance and manipulation. These are the basic building blocks for developing sport-specific and complex movement skills.
For senior graders, a wide variety of sports experiences are arranged throughout the year, such as track and field, swimming, gymnastics, rope skipping and an extensive variety of ball games. This diversity allows students to explore and discover their physical strengths and interests, it also facilitates them to develop an active lifestyle.
To motivate students to learn, think and question, the “Teaching Games for Understanding Approach” is applied to demonstrate sports skills and knowledge instead of direct teaching. Game-situations are provided during PE lessons to enhance students’ tactical use of skills, decision making and creativity.
A Swimming Gala, Sports Day and Aquathon Race are organized every year to encourage students to participate in physical activities and also to instill team spirit as the students represent their houses while competing. These events are highlights of the School Calendar and are well-received by both students and their parents. These events create opportunities for students to accept new challenges and accomplish their best. It is also a good experience for students to learn perseverance and sportsmanship.
To widen students’ horizons, sports themed overseas tours are organised. During these trips, students not only experience intensive professional sports training but also have a chance to broaden their skills. Friendly matches are carried out throughout the tours. These trips impart a vital message that sport is not just playing a game, but also something that bridges cultures and enhances teamwork.
To encourage students to actively engage in sports, a variety of programs such as triathlons, tennis, taekwondo, rope skipping, table tennis, fencing, rugby, football, basketball, to name but a few are provided as extra-curricular activities. Additionally, a variety of sports team members are trained by professionals to become elite sportspersons. These sportspersons and teams represent the School at various competitions.
The Boarding Programme at St Stephen’s Preparatory School (SSCPS) is a mandatory staple programme offered to all Grade 6 students. The programme provides a 10-months-long away from home experience where our students will learn physical, mental and emotional independence. Many will build lifelong friendships with their peers, and the programme represents a golden opportunity for our pupils to polish and enhance their social skills through peer interaction.
In the 10-month programme, pupils will not only be tasked to take care of themselves through the daily routine, but also learn to collaborate and build teamwork with others in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities, community services and adventure-based trainings.
We aim to develop our students in the following key areas: Independence and Responsibility, Confidence, Social Skills including Conflict Resolution skills and Strong Work Ethic.
The SSCPS Boarding Programme is mainly divided into four areas of training:
It is our goal to help our students grow up as individuals with the ability to think and live independently, with positive and motivated personalities, and be prepared to pursue their further studies abroad or in Hong Kong.
The School is dedicated to nurture and develop positive character traits in the students.
The theme of our Ethics Education Programme this year is We are One in the Bond of Love. Co-curricular activities under this theme will be arranged to instil a series of positive characteristics in our students.
